Deciding where things go

Choose the first best ID

Most of the time it will be obvious where to store your things. But sometimes you'll need to make a decision - should it go here or there?

This is why we designed the template with the more important/obvious stuff 'higher up'. So a rule to follow is:

• Start at the top,
• Work your way down,
• And when you find a suitable ID,
• Stop looking and use it.

Maybe there's another ID further down that could also work. But if you stick to the rule of 'choose the first one', you won't get lost.

For example, we have 11.16 Legal documents & certificates. That's where your marriage certificate should go.

However, you might notice 11.41 My partner and think, that could be a place for the certificate. Maybe: but it isn't. Because 11.16 is first.

Don't agonise

If you're unsure where something should be stored:

• Find the first suitable ID,
• Make a decision,
• And leave yourself a JDex note.

Having a well-maintained JDex means you'll never lose anything again. This is an important habit to get into.

So if you're stuck, ask. Don't save something in a place that doesn't feel right: because you might not find it again.
